U.S. Department of Homeland Security Address and Phone Number Notification Requirement

SEVIS Guidelines for F-1 and J-1 Students, Scholars and Employees

SEVIS guidelines require the following addresses and phone numbers to be properly reported and formatted:

For F-1 students: your current address, your permanent address, and your current phone number.
For J-1 students, scholars, and employees: your current address and your current phone number.

Your CURRENT Address must be your address in the USA.
Your PERMANENT Address must be your address in your HOME COUNTRY.
Your CURRENT Phone must be your 10-digit US phone number.

Your information must conform to SEVIS guidelines for the duration of your program regardless of whether you are currently in the United States or temporarily outside the U.S. (for example, on detached study, dissertation research, or vacation). If you are temporarily outside the U.S. and are maintaining your SEVIS status, you can use the U.S. address of a close family member or friend, your previous U.S. address, or your new U.S. address.

**Note: As of July 1, 2015, your CURRENT address must meet United States Postal Service (USPS) standards. Your current address must be a residential address, not a P.O. Box or a department address. When you update your address, do not “future date” the address.

**Note: As of December 4, 2015, J-1 students, scholars, and employees are required to report a 10-digit US phone number. F-1 students are required to report a 10-digit US phone number if they have one.

How to enter your CURRENT (US) address:

  1. Go to Wolverine Access > Students > Student Business > Campus Personal Information > Addresses
  2. Click Edit Current Address
  3. Select Country from the drop down list. (Click on “Choose Different Country” then click on “Change Country”.) Remember - Current Address country must be USA.
  4. Enter the address line(s), city, state and postal code.

If you live in a U-M residence hall (example: East Quad), your dormitory address should be entered according to this example:

Address line 1: 1234 Tyler House
    Address line 2: East Quadrangle
    Address line 3: 701 E University
    City: Ann Arbor
    State: MI
    Postal Code: 48109

Finally, in the lower right "Cmps Addr" box, either enter or select "RH" (Residential Housing).

    Click “SAVE”.

If you live off-campus in a house, apartment, or in Northwood, your off-campus address should be entered according to this example:

Address line 1: 1234 JONATHON CT APT 1
Address line 2: name of apartment complex or leave blank

    • Do NOT ENTER a P.O. Box or UM department address.
    • Do NOT use punctuation.
    • Do NOT ENTER information in Address Line 3.
    • Enter the city, state and postal code.
    • Before you click “SAVE”, verify that your address meets federal Post Office standards at: https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction_input.
      • Input the address. If the USPS site provides a slightly different address than the one you entered, copy the address provided by USPS into Address Line 1

        Example:

        If you entered:

630 East Liberty Street, Apt. 1, Ann Arbor MI 48104

And the result from the USPS website is:

        630 E LIBERTY ST APT 1
        ANN ARBOR MI 48104

Then, paste: 630 E LIBERTY ST APT 1 into Address Line 1

    • Click “SAVE”.

  1. Go to Wolverine Access > Students > Student Business > Campus Personal Information > Addresses
  2. Click Edit Permanent Address
  3. Select Country from the drop down list. (Click on “Choose Different Country” then click on “Change Country”.) Remember the Permanent Address country cannot be USA.

    • Enter additional address information on Address Line 2 if necessary.
    • Do NOT enter a P.O. Box or departmental address in either line.
    • Do NOT enter address information in Address Line 3.
  5. Enter the city.
  6. Enter the state/region/province and postal code if these are part of mailing addresses for your country.
  7. Do not “future date” the address.
  8. Click “SAVE”.

How to verify and/or update your CURRENT Phone Number information in Wolverine Access:

  1. Go to Wolverine Access > Students > Student Business > Campus Personal Information > Phone Numbers
  2. If there is already a phone number labeled “Current Address Voice,” skip to instruction #6 in this list. If there is NOT already a phone number labeled “Current Address Voice,” click “Add A Phone Number” and then select “Current Address Voice” in the drop-down menu under “Phone Type.” If you are an F-1 student and you do not have any US phone number that you can use, skip to instruction #15 in this list. If you are a J-1 student/scholar/employee and you do not have any US phone number that you can use, please use your department’s phone number.
  3. In the box to the right of the “Current Address Voice” label (underneath “Telephone”), enter your 10-digit US phone number. Do NOT enter a “1” before the number. Example: if your number is (555) 555-5555, you would enter 5555555555. Only use a number that is your personal mobile number, home number, or another number where you can be reached. Do NOT use the International Center’s phone number!
  4. Do not enter anything in the boxes underneath the labels “Ext” or “Country” or “Preferred.”
  5. Click “SAVE.” You will see after you save that the phone number will be formatted to look like this: 555/555-5555. This is okay. It means you did it right!
  6. If you are an F-1 student and you do not have a US phone number where you can be contacted, you may opt to not report a phone number. However, if you do not have a US phone number, you may NOT report any phone numbers with the label “Current Address Voice.” If you currently have a non-US phone number listed under Current Address Voice, please either delete this phone number OR change the “Phone Type” in the drop-down menu to a different label and then click “SAVE.”
  7. Note that it is possible to have the same phone number listed under several different “Phone Types.” For example, if your mobile phone number is (555) 555-5555, you could list it as “Current Address Voice” and “Mobile.” See picture below.
