U.S. Department of Homeland Security Address Notification Requirement

SEVIS Guidelines for F-1 and J-1 Students, Scholars and Employees

SEVIS address guidelines recognize and require the proper formatting of two addresses:
For F-1 students: your current address and your permanent address.
For J-1 students, scholars, and employees: your current address.

Your CURRENT Address must be your address in the USA.
Your PERMANENT Address must be your address in your HOME COUNTRY.

Your address information must conform to SEVIS guidelines for the duration of your program regardless of whether you are currently in the United States or temporarily outside the U.S., for example, on vacation. If you are temporarily outside the U.S. and are maintaining your SEVIS status, you can use the U.S. address of a close family member or friend, your previous US address, or your new U.S. address.

For both Current and Permanent addresses, verify and/or update your address information in Wolverine Access following the instructions below:

  1. Enter the street address in Address Line 1.
  2. Enter additional address information on Address Line 2 if necessary.
  3. Do NOT enter a P.O. box or departmental address in either line.
  4. Do NOT enter address information in Address Line 3.
  5. Enter the city.
  6. Enter the state and postal code. (These are required for Current Address but are optional for Permanent Address).
  7. Select country from the drop down list. (Click on “Choose Different Country” then click on “Change Country”.) Remember - Current Address country must be USA and Permanent Address country cannot be USA.
  8. Click “SAVE” whether you make changes or not. Do not “future date” either address.

Note: You may experience a delay of up to 2-3 weeks after you attend the Mandatory Checkin before you can access Wolverine Access. To update your address during this time, go to the U-M Office of the Registrar at 500 S. State Street, in the LSA building. Once you are able to access Wolverine Access, you should update your address online.
J-1 Scholar
Your DS-2019 was NOT issued by U-M, but issued by, for example, Fulbright. You should follow the address updating guidelines of the organization that issued your DS-2019. You do not need to maintain your address information with U-M.
