Reporting Changes in Job Duties

The University of Michigan is responsible for ensuring continued compliance with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. When the purpose, scope or duration of a foreign national employee's position changes substantially, the change may impact the employee's visa status, and require the U-M International Center to file a visa amendment with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Hiring departments are required to report the following substantial changes to the U-M International Center:

  • Promotions (e.g., Research Fellow [trainee title] to Researcher)
  • Demotions
  • Substantial changes in job duties
  • Decreases in hours, salary, benefits (e.g., part-time to full-time or vice versa)
  • Changes in physical location to another geographic location (e.g., Ann Arbor to Washington, D.C.)
  • Moves to other U-M departments
