Planning Where to Go

Before going on vacation, you should consider these questions in order to focus your ideas. If you are traveling with a group of people, it may be helpful to think through these questions together.

  1. If I had a limited time to tour the U.S. what states would I want to see?
  2. What are the most important cities to visit? What must I see?
  3. When is the best time to go to these cities?
  4. How will I get around the city?
  5. What is the best way to get there?
  6. Where will I stay?
  7. Pick 5–10 of the most important sites to see in the U.S. Think in terms of natural phenomena, monuments, museums, theatres, etc.
  8. How can I keep the cost of travel down? Realistically, how much money will I spend on a week vacation?
  9. Once I am in a city, how do I figure out what to do, where to go, where to stay?
  10. What travel guides should I use?
  11. What must I not forget not pack?
  12. Where should I keep my money and valuable possessions when I travel?
  13. Where should I go on spring break or for my summer vacation?
  14. How many people should I travel with?
  15. What safety issues must I be aware of (where not to go alone, where not to go at night, etc.)?
