U-M Study Abroad Resource Offices and Programs

The Education Abroad Office, a unit of the U-M International Center, provides valuable resources to help prepare you for your study abroad experience. The office provides a one-stop resource for finding overseas educational opportunities, both curricular and co-curricular, houses an extensive library, and provides guidance by professional staff and student peer advisors experienced in studying and working abroad.

The Office of International Programs (OIP), a constituent unit of U-M College of Literature, Science & the Arts, offers the largest number of University of Michigan study abroad programs. OIP programs are available worldwide and are primarily for undergraduates. All OIP programs provide “in-residence” credit for U-M students. Financial Aid can usually be used towards the cost of OIP programs. U-M students in all schools and colleges are welcome to apply.
U-M Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates Program (GIEU)

For U-M undergraduates only. This is an experiential short term intercultural study program of a global nature. The GIEU Program sends small groups of U-M students for inexpensive 3-4 week spring/summer learning experiences directed by U-M faculty members. The application deadline is in November.

Resource office for U-M students in all schools and colleges. The International Center's Education Abroad Office does not administer study abroad programs. However, it offers one-stop information on curricular and co-curricular options for study abroad, scholarships, selected programs for international internships, work and volunteering abroad, and information on student travel abroad. We have resources of interest to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and alumni. Peer advisors can share their first-hand perspective on studying and working in many different countries.

The International Institute and its Area Studies Centers
Invaluable resources for international studies both here in Ann Arbor and abroad. The Areas Studies Centers offer coursework for undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as lectures, workshops, performances, films, and many other on-campus international educational events. Each Area Studies Center offers e-mail announcements of their events, and information on funding and job opportunities specific to that Center's region.

The International Institute offers scholarships for U-M undergraduate and graduate students to support overseas study, research and internships. These include the prestigious Fulbright Fellowships that are available to graduating seniors, graduates and graduate students.

This Center offers fully-funded research experiences abroad (also known as Fogarty grants) in Chile, China, South Africa, Jamaica, and Ghana for undergraduates and medical students. African-American, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Island students are particularly encouraged to apply. Research focus is on biomedical or behavioral research on topics related to child health development. The application deadline for summer placements is in November.

Check with your college, school, or department to see if it offers student exchanges for study, research, internships not mentioned here. Many such exchanges exist on a small scale, without an administrative office, or may be arranged with the assistance of individual faculty members and may not have web sites.
