Overseas Internships

Directory of International Internships
Authors: Charles Gliozzo and Kelly Bishop. Based on a survey thousands of organizations, this book lists over 200 internship programs located abroad, sponsored by U.S. universities and other organizations. Perhaps half of the listed internships have some payment in the form of a stipend and/or room. Excellent indexes by country and subject.

Academic Year Abroad and Short-Term Study Abroad
Listing around 5,600 study abroad programs sponsored by colleges and universities, over 1,500 of these include an internship, practical training, or volunteer component. All charge fees and most award academic credit; some offer scholarships. See indexes for internships, practical training, volunteer/service, and student teaching. These books can be accessed online at IIEPassport.org. Use terms listed in the ADVANCED search under FORMAT - “internship”, “practical training”, “volunteer”, or “teach” with other desired search information. Or you can access this and other books from U-M International Center's online Study Abroad Web Sites. These directories are available for your use at the U-M International Center.
Peterson's Study Abroad and Peterson's Summer Study Abroad
Similar to the IIE directories above but not as complete. Lists 3,400 programs, of which over 800 offer internships. See special index for internships. Available from Peterson's Guides.
The Internship Bible
Authors: Mark Oldman and Samer Harmadeh. Detailed information on non-academic internship programs offered by over 900 organizations. Around 120 of these may have overseas options--see country index--but the book usually does say whether overseas internships are actually available. Indexes also for subject of interest, level in college, foreign students eligible, etc.
BUNAC Work Abroad Participant's Handbooks
These handbooks (especially the one for Britain), contain numerous addresses of employers, organized by sector, offering paid career-related work. These are available at the U-M International Center.

Volunteering Abroad

How to Live Your Dream of Volunteering Overseas
Authors: Joseph Collins, Stefano DeZerega, and Zahara Heckscher. This highly-recommended book provides a comprehensive overview of volunteering abroad, including evaluations of over 100 volunteer abroad programs. Twelve chapters cover topics such as: Is Volunteering Overseas Right for You, Pros and Cons of the Peace Corps, Doing it Without a Program, Overcoming Financial Obstacles, How to Be an Effective International Volunteer, and Staying Involved When You Get Back.
International Volunteer Programs Association (IVPA).
Not a book, but a don't miss web site. This professional association for international volunteer programs sets standards for programs and lists those adhering to them on its web site in a searchable database.

International Internships and Careers

The BIG Guide to Living and Working Overseas
Author: Jean-Marc Hachey. This massive book (much of which is available free online) is one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date guides available for work abroad and international careers. The author, who is a consultant on international careers, provides in-depth advice and reviews of every imaginable resource. May be purchased for $49.95 as a book, or subscribed to online, giving complete access to the full contents. It profiles organizations based mainly in Canada and the U.S., though it does not cover U.S. government agencies.
Careers in International Affairs
Authors: Maria Pinto Carland and Lisa A. Gihring.Profiles of organizations mention internship programs where offered, as well as requirements for entry-level positions.
The Directory of Websites for International Jobs
Authors: Ron and Caryl Krannich. Identifies more than 1,400 web sites for launching a global job search. The authors, renowned for their extensive career publications, also cover strategies for organizing an effective online job search.
The Global Citizen: A Guide to Creating an International Life and Career
The author Elizabeth Kruempelmann, is an American who has lived abroad extensively and served as a Monster.com International Career Mentor, covers a broad variety of topics, from preparing to go abroad to studying, volunteering and working abroad, to building a career.
International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide
Authors: Daniel Lauber with Kraig Rice. Provides the latest information on over 1200 resources (web and print) for an international job search. Includes specialty and trade periodicals, job hotlines, Internet job and resume databases, job placement services, avoiding job scams, directories, and salary surveys.
International Jobs: Where They Are, How to Get Them
Authors: Nina Segal and Eric Kocher. Profiles of organizations mention internship programs where offered, as well as requirements for entry-level positions; websites provided throughout. This book provides the most up-to-date, concise and readable introduction to international careers.
