Non-U-M Students: AIESEC U.S.
AIESEC, a non-profit internship exchange program, offers positions in teaching English for non-certified students for summer or longer term. Placements are typically in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia. All positions are paid enough to cover in-country expenses, and housing and transportation are arranged before the teacher's arrival. There is a fee for the program which includes placement, any visa costs, and a preparation program before going abroad. Airfare is not included in the fee.
# Alliance Abroad/AIDE
Offers teaching assistant placements in Argentina, Chile, China, and Spain for periods of one month to one year. There is an application fee, as well as a program fee. Includes 80 hours of training, room and board, insurance, orientation, credits, excursions and monthly stipend. Accepts 30 participants per year.
# CIEE Teach Abroad Programs
Places participants in English teaching positions in urban and rural areas of the Chile, China, Spain, and Thailand, for 5-10 month contracts. Basic requirement is a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Program fee includes placement, work visa, orientation and training, furnished accommodations, basic health care through local clinics, and program support by CIEE staff. There is an application fee.
# Cultural Embrace
Offers paid and volunteer English teaching positions in Latin America (i.e.: Bolivia, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, etc.), Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Honduras, Spain, and Thailand. Positions are also available teaching English and coordinating social and recreational activities for international students at summer camps throughout England. Previous teaching experience is helpful, but not required. Most programs include an online TEFL course to be completed before teaching assignment begins. There is an application fee.
# English Language Teaching Assistant Program (ELTAP)
ELTAP is a four to eleven week undergraduate and graduate course for credit where participants help teachers of English in schools by using their native fluency in English in communication with students and teachers. Open to undergraduates and graduates. Placements have been made in Brazil, Cameroon, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Lithuania, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, and Vietnam. Placements are available in twelve other countries. Most participants stay with families, but some stay in flats or school dorms. Some housing arrangements are at no cost. Participants must write a paper on the experience and keep an analytical journal; grading is pass/fail. Application fee. Placements made year-round, approximately 20-30 per quarter. Program is open to students from other universities. Offers credit and international service certificate. A second program, University of Minnesota Morris Global Student Teaching Program, places education students in supervised classrooms in Europe, Asia, and Africa (See http://www.morris.umn.edu/GST/ for student-teaching opportunities abroad for Education majors.)
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships
U-M students: See the campus Fulbright advisor in the U-M International Institute. One-year positions available in 38 countries around the world. A separate program is available for Austria (see Europe section, below). Bachelor's degree required. Deadline for currently enrolled students is mid-September a year before the position starts, or mid- to late-October for applicants-at-large. For Austria, applicants must apply directly to Austrian Fulbright Commission. Application deadline for Austria only is February 15.
# GeoVisions
GeoVisions offers short term (1-3 months) teaching placements in France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Peru, Russia, Spain, and Turkey through their Conversation Corps program. Participants live with local families and teach English approximately 15 hours per week. Arrival dates are flexible. GeoVisions also offers teaching opportunities in Argentina, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, India, Peru, Thailand, and Vietnam through venues such as orphanages and camps. Paid teaching opportunities are available in Chile, China and Thailand.
# Global Routes Internship Placements
Global Routes places pairs of teaching interns 18 years of age and older in local schools in remote villages in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Tanzania, and Thailand. Interns live with host families and teach full time in the local schools. They are also expected to complete a community service project in their community. 2-month summer and 3-month academic term placements available. Program fees do not including airfare. There is a registration fee. No application deadline, limited to space available; groups have 8-12 interns. All in-country expenses included in fee: orientation, training, housing, meals, local travel and activities, full-time leader, etc. For requirements, application, deadlines and dates, students should refer to the web site or contact the office.
# i-to-i
Offers paid teaching placements in China, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Slovakia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom. Contracts range from 3-13 months, depending on the country. With the exception of certain cities in China and private schools in Taiwan, no previous teaching experience is required. Participants will complete a 100-hour Online TEFL course before departing to destination country, which is included in the program fees. Some locations accept students who have not yet earned their university degree. Salary and housing arrangements differ depending on the location. See website for more details. Program fee is reduced if already TEFL certified.
InterExchange
Flexible, 1-3 month programs in Spain. Tutor 15 hours a week while living with host family. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-35. Females are preferred, though there are limited positions available for males. Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful. Also offers a 3-8 month program in Ghana. Work permit, orientation, discounted access to health insurance, housing, and full board are provided. Application deadline is 2 months prior to desired start date.
# The International Partnership for Service Learning
Programs for summer, semester, or year combining academic courses for credit with unpaid service work in human services, health care, special education, TEFL, or community development. Locations are Ecuador, India, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, and South Dakota (Lakota Nation). Application fee is refunded if not accepted and deducted from program fees if accepted. Deadline is 2-3 months prior to starting date. Room and board, orientation, instruction, supervision, and field trips provided. Also offers a one-year MA degree program in International Service.
U.S. Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is one of the best-paid volunteer jobs: all expenses paid, extensive training, and a resettlement allowance after completing 2-year assignment. Placements in over 70 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific Basin, and Russia. Math and science teachers are especially in demand. Jobs in agriculture, business, health, skilled trades, etc., also available. U.S. citizens only. No upper age limit. No application deadline, but allow 9 months between application and placement. Approximately 3,500 volunteers are placed annually.
# World Endeavors
World Endeavors offers short term volunteer teaching programs (up to 12 weeks, with programs typically running 4-6 weeks) in Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Ghana, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Thailand. Fees and application deadlines vary according to program, with most programs suggesting that you apply at least 12 weeks prior to your intended start date. No TEFL certification is required. World Endeavors also offers an internship in teaching English in Italy. This program lasts 3-6 months. No knowledge of Italian is necessary. Participants will take part in an intensive Italian language training (80 hours per month) upon arrival in Italy. By the conclusion of the program, participants will earn a professional language certification. Multiple application deadlines are listed on web site and depend on the desired departure date.
# WorldTeach
WorldTeach is a well-established international volunteer program, with nearly two decades of experience training, placing and supporting volunteers as teachers in developing countries. Currently offers 10-12 month programs in Chile, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Kenya, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Pohnpei and Kosrae), Namibia, Rwanda, Samoa, and Thailand. Six month placement also available in Chile. Summer placements in Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Namibia, Poland, and South Africa. Most volunteers teach English; host institutions and age/level of students depend on the needs of the host country. Bachelor's degree required. Volunteers pay a program fee (with the exception of the fully-funded Marshall Islands year program), depending on the level of funding provided by the host country. Volunteers contribute or fundraise the cost of their placement in order to provide teachers to countries that would otherwise not be able to afford to support foreign teachers. The program fee includes airfare, room and board, health insurance, training and on-site support.

K-12 Teaching Positions at International Schools

International School Services
Positions are available in American international schools abroad. English is the language of instruction at these K-12 college preparatory schools which serve dependents of the expatriate business, mission, relief and governmental community. Very selective program entails interviewing at a U.S.-based International Recruitment Center (IRC) after passing the initial screening by ISS. There is an application fee, no placement fee, fee per person per IRC registration fee. Must have at least two of the three: bachelor's degree, teaching certification, and two years teaching experience. Must be willing to consider at least two large geographic regions, particularly in the developing world for a 2-year contract. Areas in special demand include math, science, computers, library/media specialist, music, and counseling. There is an application fee.

IIEPassport
These are study abroad programs, granting academic credit, with a student teaching component. Available for summers or semesters. Listed in Academic Year Abroad and Short-Term Study Abroad, directories available in the U-M International Center or other university study abroad offices, and online using advanced search and selecting “student teaching” in Format.

Positions in Africa

Teachers for Africa - IFESH
This mentoring program places an ethnically diverse group of experienced American administrators, schoolteachers, teachers with special skills, and college professors in formal and informal educational institutions in sub-Saharan African Countries. They have placed over 780 teachers and educators in 13 African countries including: Benin, Dibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Malawi, Namibia and Nigeria. You must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident. There is no fee to apply. Work permits, health insurance and a U.S. is provided monthly. You must have at least 3 years of teaching experience to apply to the program. These volunteers spend one academic year helping to improve the educational system in areas such as curriculum development, teacher trainers, ESL, HIV/AIDS, and computer literacy. Looking for teachers who can teach on the kindergarten level as well as the university level. Applications from minorities and faculty members on sabbatical or leave of absence are strongly encouraged to apply. IFESH also offers the International Fellows Program (IFP), a very selective paid internship program open to graduating seniors and graduate students. Application deadline is February 28.

Positions in Europe, Russia, and Central Asia

# American-Scandinavian Foundation
Teach English in Finland gives young Americans an opportunity to spend a period of practical training in Finland teaching English as a foreign language in Finnish kindergartens, schools, colleges, private and public institutions. It also gives young Americans the chance to get an insight into the Finnish culture and its people. Most Teaching Assistant Placements are half or full academic year assignments (late August/May). There are no summer placements. In order to be eligible, you must be a college junior, senior, graduate student or recent graduate (within 2 years of graduation) who is a native English speaker at least 21 years of age with US citizenship or permanent residency and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Previous teaching experience and/or studies in Education, Pre-School Education, or English preferred. Salaries are sufficient to meet living expenses but you will be expected to pay your trip to and from Scandinavia yourself. Housing is arranged and individual is responsible for the rent. ASF charges a Non-Refundable Administrative Fee. Finnish government charges a fee for work permit.
# Austrian Fulbright Commission
Financed by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, this program provides U.S. university graduates with opportunities to work as English teaching assistants throughout Austria. U.S. teaching assistants are assigned to one or two Austrian secondary schools and required to assist teachers of English in classroom instruction 12 hours per week. Applicants may request city or region to which they wish to be assigned. However, the number of teaching positions available in larger metropolitan areas, such as Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, and Innsbruck, is limited. Therefore applicants also should be prepared to accept teaching positions in smaller communities. Applicants should have at least a Bachelor's degree and be interested in careers in education. Prospective teachers of German or TESOL and/or graduates with a documented interest in Austrian studies are particularly encouraged to apply. A working knowledge of German is required and necessary to facilitate classroom work. There are mandatory deductions for health and accident insurance and Austrian income tax. The program runs October 1 - May 31; application deadline is February 15 for the following fall. Participants must attend an orientation seminar in late September. If accepted, an administrative fee is due. Approximately 120 US teaching assistants are placed throughout the country. Applications are available online.
# Camp Counselors USA (CCUSA)
Offers an educational work-travel program in youth camps all across European Russia and into Western Siberia. CCUSA's Russian Program provides placement in a camp with full room and board and a small, symbolic stipend (not enough to cover program fee). Minimum requirements include a love of children and some experience with them. Fee includes round-trip airfare from New York, visa, travel insurance, orientations (no training in teaching techniques) in New York and Moscow, and support during the 4 or 8 week program. Application deadline: April 1. Usually about 100 applicants. CCUSA also offers a Teach China program and Work Experience Programs in Australia and New Zealand.
Central European Teaching Program
Placements for semester or school year in elementary schools, high schools, and colleges in Hungary. Teachers have significant control over where they are placed (country and city). Must have bachelor's degree; all degrees are welcome. Experience teaching ESL or other subject preferred. Teachers of English, History, Literature, Creative Writing, French, German, Spanish, Social Studies, American Culture, British Culture, and various electives (all classes except French, German, and Spanish are taught in English) are needed. Housing, salary (at current rates in host country), and basic health insurance provided. Application fee and placement fees range depending on program duration and other factors. Placement fee includes in-country orientation and support during program year. Applications accepted year-round. Mid-year placements also available.
French Cultural Services-English Assistantships in France
This program of the French Ministry of Education may place 1,500 Americans with some knowledge of French into English assistant posts in French schools. Job involves 12 hours of English conversation classes per week. Monthly salary. Timeframe of positions is from October 1 to April 30. Application deadline is February 1. Serendipity American Home English Program
Positions in Vladimir, Russia teaching English at the American Home for one year with the possibility of one additional year. Applicants should have at least a bachelor's degree (in any subject) and a strong interest in working in Russia. Acquiring some knowledge of Russian and experience in tutoring/teaching is strongly recommended before departure. Must take an online TEFL course. Teachers receive a stipend, plus an additional amount to cover room and board (two meals a day) with a host family, a work permit, weekly individual tutoring sessions in Russian, and internet access. Also provided is an approximately three-week orientation at beginning of program, support from Russian and American staff, and a substantial collection of teaching materials. Teachers are responsible for their own airfare, health insurance, and visa fees. Application fee. Deadline is March 15 each year. Generally receive 12 applications per year to fill at least eight positions--depending on the number of returning teachers. Participants may return for a second year. Recently, three teachers have returned for a third year. Substantial additional information on the program, application forms and instructions are available on their web site. And additional information is provided before departure. This includes back issues of newsletters, a Teacher Handbook, and a video made by the current teachers for the incoming group.
Spanish Embassy Program
Grantees will work as English language and North American culture assistant teachers under the supervisor and guidance of a classroom teacher. Assistants will teach 12-16 hours per week. Candidates should be U.S. or Canadian citizens, be at least an undergraduate junior, and have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish. Grantees are provided with an orientation period at the beginning of their contract, medical insurance, a stipend, and paid school holidays. Apply online; application deadline in 2007 was April 16th. There were 1,300 opening for the 2008-2009 school year.

Specialized University-Level Teaching

The Civic Education Project
The Civic Education Project (CEP) is an international not-for-profit organization, affiliated with Yale University and the Central European University, which places faculty in social science departments in Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and the Middle East for a year of teaching and program development. Faculty and advanced graduate students in the fields of anthropology, economics, education, gender studies, history, international relations, law, library science, political science, public administration and sociology are invited to apply. Lecturers receive a stipend, round trip airfare, housing, and Western-style health insurance. Applications may be made via the CEP web site or regular mail, and must be postmarked/dated no later than February 15.
City University
Sends experienced instructors to City University's branches in Bratislava, Trencin, and Slovakia as well as to Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Greece, Mexico, Romania, and Switzerland to teach in one or more of the following areas: academic prep English, undergraduate business, and MBA programs. Masters degree or higher in subject area preferred. About 20 total placements (EFL and credit courses) annually out of 120-140 applicants. A few teachers occasionally needed mid-year. Programs in the Far East

Asia

Princeton-in-Asia
Paid English teaching, science and engineering teaching, history, etc. international development (NGOs), journalism, and business positions for college graduates for one or two years. Teaching placements in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.

New positions are always under development and may also be available. Participants are typically responsible for transportation. Salaries vary per country, though are in all cases livable and in some cases generous. Housing and health insurance are provided. Must be able to interview in January and attend an orientation in May, both at Princeton University. There is an application fee.

China

Appalachians Abroad Teach in China
Participants teach English at K-12 and higher education institutions in Shanghai or Beijing, but placements in other areas also available. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's degree and a 6-day intensive orientation program in Shanghai, China in late August. An eight-week online China TEFL training is available to accepted participants from mid-May to Mid-July. Job placement, work permit, international airfare, housing, health insurance, domestic travel stipend and paid vacation provided. Salary varies depending on qualifications. Program length is one academic year (10 months) beginning in September (limited number of February departures available). Application deadline is March 31 for positions starting the following fall or spring. Program fee includes job placement, China TEFL online training, 6-day Shanghai orientation, one-year basic travel accident and health insurance coverage and Chinese working visa assistance. Since the founding of the program, there are an average of 30-50 participants every year ranging from recent college graduates to retirees. There is an application fee.
# Colorado China Council
Places native English speakers with a minimum of a B.A. into university teaching positions in China for six months to one-year contracts. Teach English or other fields depending on your background and the school's needs. No Chinese necessary. The Chinese schools provide free housing, health care, good monthly stipend (by Chinese standards). You pay round-trip airfare although some schools will reimburse airfare home. Fees include 3-week TEFL institute, Chinese classes, etc. Fall application deadline March 1, 2009 but apply early. Places 20-35 teachers annually. There is an application fee. Also offers a summer program in July hosted in conjunction with Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Teach English, US history and culture to Chinese students ages 13-25. Teach in mornings and sightsee/learn Chinese language and culture with Chinese students in afternoons and on weekends. Three days of sightseeing in Shanghai. Must be at least a junior in college; Chinese language or teaching background helpful. Cost is varies depending upon application postmark and includes visa fee, room and board, and travel expenses while in China.

Japan

Earlham College, Teaching English in Japan
A two-year program aimed at maximizing linguistic and cultural integration of the participants, who act as assistant teachers. Placements made for August 1 start date. Most in junior high schools in northern Japan. Airfare, salary, housing, and health insurance provided. Bachelor's degree, cultural sensitivity, basic knowledge of Japanese and some teacher training required if accepted, but not necessary at time of application. No formal deadlines; best to apply between September and January (placements made 6-12 months before start date). No application or program fees. Must interview in Richmond, IN. Approximately 25 placement each year.
JET Program
Administered by the Japanese government, this is a paid one to four year program for teaching English in junior or senior high schools in Japan. Bachelor's degree and U.S. citizenship required. Airfare, salary, orientations, health insurance, pension benefits, paid vacation, and housing arranged with contracting organizations. All majors are welcome to apply! Japanese language skills not required for teaching positions. A background in Asian Studies, previous experience abroad, teaching experience or other experience with groups of children seem to be advantages for applicants but are not required. For those with at least an intermediate command of Japanese, Coordinator of International Relations positions are available. Required interviews are given at Japanese consulates throughout the U.S. (including Detroit). More than 6,000 JET teachers from over 38 countries are in Japan annually; approximately half renew for a second year. In 2006, there were approximately 2759 JET participants from the U.S.
Westgate Corporation English Teaching Programs in Japan
Westgate Corporation is looking for highly motivated individuals to teach conversational English to Japanese university or junior college students in Japan for approximately 3 to 5 months (University Program), to Japanese elementary school children at private elementary schools for approximately 3-6 months (Young Learners Program). Must have bachelor's degree or above. Japanese language skills are not required. Full-time. Furnished apartment, health insurance, teaching materials, teacher training, work visa, and airfare reimbursement provided. Korea

English Program in Korea (EPIK)
Administered by the Korean government, this is a one-year program for teaching English in Korean schools or provincial in-service training centers. Basic requirement is two years of university, but salary increases with experience and/or TEFL certification. No participation or application fees. Work permit, health insurance, orientation, settlement allowance, and housing provided. Application deadline is December 15, though applications are always accepted.

Private Language Schools in East Asia

Asia/Middle East

ELS
Internationally recognized English schools with over 30 company-owned locations in the U.S. and over 35 franchise locations overseas. Primary Asian locations: China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia. Middle East locations: Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. (In Latin America: Panama and Mexico) Requirements are generally a BA and a minimum of 1 year of teaching experience or a TEFL certificate. Salaries vary and may include accommodations for some overseas schools.

Japan

AEON Intercultural Corporation
Recruits teachers for their 290 schools in Japan from their offices in Chicago and other locations. Hires year-round, 1-year contracts. Must have bachelor's degree or above, must attend interview process in U.S. or Canada. Japanese language skills are not required. Five-day work week is 36 hours, of which 25 are teaching hours. Furnished apartment, health insurance, teacher training, and processing fee provided. Send resume and essay about why you would like to live and work in Japan to nearest regional office. Interviews often given locally. Apply 2-6 months before desired departure date. Those interested in working solely with children should look into the related Amity Teaching program which specializes in placements with younger children.
GEOS
Language school chain with over 500 locations throughout Japan and worldwide. Types of positions available include Substitute Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Head Teacher, Homestay Coordinator and Human Resources Personnel. Salary, housing, insurance, teaching materials and ongoing teacher training are provided. Hires year-round, requires 1-year contract with 26 teaching hours/week. Application is in form of resume and cover letter, as well as on-site interview in a GEOS office. Must attend orientation and training at GEOS office. Bachelor's degree, enthusiasm and flexibility required; overseas living experience or teaching/business experience desirable.

Taiwan

Hess Educational Organization
Recruits teachers for over 100 schools around Taiwan. Claims to be the largest private language school in Taiwan. Offers three one-year contract options. Must have a bachelor's degree and passport from an English-speaking country. Desire to work with a variety of age groups and to experience Asian culture strongly preferred.
