Non-U-M Students: AIESEC U.S.
AIESEC, a non-profit internship exchange program, offers positions in teaching English for non-certified students for summer or longer term. Most placements are in South America and recent destinations include Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Venezuela. Placements are also available in Eastern Europe and Asia, including opportunities in China. AIESEC is in over 100 countries. All positions are paid enough to cover in-country expenses, and housing and transportation are arranged before the teacher's arrival. There is a fee for the program which includes placement, any visa costs, and a preparation program before going abroad. Airfare is not included in the fee. Check the AIESEC Michigan website for more information on admission deadlines; there are two recruitment cycles per academic year.
# AIDE
Offers teaching placements in Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, Guatemala, Peru, South Africa, and Spain for one month to one year. Short term projects may not require a Bachelor’s degree. Acceptance of individuals is based on ability to succeed overseas, not on previous teaching experience. There is an application fee. Program fees depend on country and length of stay. Fee includes room and board and limited emergency medical insurance. Some teaching programs will include a stipend. Accepts 200-250 participants per year. Submit application 3 months prior to desired departure date. Rolling admissions.
# CIEE Teach Abroad Programs
Places participants in English teaching positions in urban and rural areas of the Chile, China, Dominican Republic, South Korea, Spain, and Thailand, Vietnam for 4-12 month contracts. Basic requirement is a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Program fees vary depending on location and length of program. Program fee includes placement, work visa, orientation and training, furnished accommodations, basic health care through local clinics, and program support by CIEE staff. Application fee required. Additional health insurance available separately. Salary varies according to qualifications and host institution. Deadline for programs vary depending on country and start date. # Cultural Embrace
Offers paid and volunteer English teaching positions in Mexico, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Language exchange programs are also available in Brazil, China, France, Italy, and Spain, where students teach English to a host family 15 hours/week in exchange for room and board. Bachelor’s degree required. Previous teaching experience is helpful, but not required. Most programs include an online TEFL course to be completed before teaching assignment begins. Both salary and program fees vary according to location and duration of assignment. There is an application fee. See website for application deadlines.
# English Language Teaching Assistant Program (ELTAP)
EFLTA is a four to eleven week undergraduate and graduate course for credit where participants help teachers of English in schools by using their native fluency in English in communication with students and teachers. Open to undergraduates and graduates. Placements have been made in over 50 countries as listed on the website. Most participants stay with families, but some stay in apartments or school dorms. Some housing arrangements are at no cost, others are not. There is are program fees and an application fee. See website for pricing details. No salary. Offers credit and international service certificate. Placements made year-round, approximately 20-30 per quarter. A second program, Global Student Teaching, places education students in supervised classrooms in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships
U-M students: See the campus Fulbright advisor in the U-M International Institute. One year Teaching Assistantships in 47 countries throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. A separate program is available in Austria (see below or go directly to the Austrian Fulbright application). Bachelor's degree required. Strong preference is given to majors in appropriate foreign language who are interested in international education. No fees associated. Salary varies depending on the country. U-M Application deadline is usually in mid-September or mid to late October for applicants-at-large.
# GeoVisions
GeoVisions offers short term (1-3 months) teaching placements in Austria, Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Galapagos, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Peru, Lebanon, Nepal, Peru,  Russia, Spain, Thailand, and Turkey through their Conversation Corps program. Participants live with local families and teach English approximately 15 hours per week. Arrival dates are flexible. Paid teaching opportunities are available in South Korea for 6 months or Thailand for 5 or 10 months. Program costs vary depending on country and length of stay and airfare is not included. # Global Routes Internship Placements
Global Routes places pairs of teaching interns in local schools in remote villages in Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Kenya, India, Tanzania, and Thailand. Summer (2 months) and academic term (3 months) placements available. Interns live with host families and teach full time in the local schools. They are also expected to complete a community service project in their community. There is a registration fee as well as a program fee. Must be at least 18 years old. No salary. For requirements, application, deadlines, and dates, students should refer to the website or contact the office.
# Greenheart Travel/Center for Cultural Exchange (CCI) 
Offers teach abroad programs of varying durations in China, Georgia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Most programs only require a bachelor’s degree in anything, but the Teach in Taiwan requires a formal teaching certification (a TEFL certification alone is not sufficient). Participants receive a monthly stipend that varies by country. For more detailed information on salary, check the website. No program fees associated, except the Teach in Thailand program. The Teach in Georgia program is an all-expenses-paid initiative started in conjunction with the Georgian Ministry of Education. See website for application deadlines. 
# i-to-i
Offers paid teaching placements in China, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Contracts range from 5-13 months, depending on the country. With the exception of certain cities in China and private schools in Taiwan, no previous teaching experience is required. Participants will complete a 100-hour Online TEFL course before departing to destination country, which is included in the program fees. Some locations accept students who have not yet earned their university degree. Salary and housing arrangements differ depending on the location. Program fee is reduced if already TEFL certified. InterExchange
Flexible, 1-3 month programs in Austria, Ecuador, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain; tutor 15 hours a week while living with host family. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-35. Females are preferred, though there are limited positions available for males. Some knowledge of host-country language is helpful. 1-8 month program in Ghana. Work permit, orientation provided, discounted access to health insurance provided, housing and full board are provided. 4 month program in Chile; teach full time alongside a Chilean teacher while living with a host family; receive a monthly stipend. And 6 month program in China; room and board is provided as well as a monthly stipend. Check website for fees which vary depending on country. Application deadline is 2 months prior to desired start date.
# The International Partnership for Service Learning
Programs for summer, semester, or year combining academic courses for credit with unpaid service work in human services, health care, special education, TEFL, or community development. Locations in Australia, Ecuador, France, Ghana, India, Italy, Jamaica, Peru, Spain and Thailand. There is a program fee and an application fee. Room and board, orientation, instruction, supervision, and field trips provided, but airfare is not included. Program fee varies according to location. No salary. Application deadlines vary depending on location and start date; check website for more information. Also offers a one-year MA degree program in International Service in Jamaica or Mexico and England.
U.S. Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is one of the best-paid volunteer jobs: all expenses paid, extensive training, and a resettlement allowance after completing 2-year assignment. Placements in over 70 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific Basin, and Russia. Math and science teachers are especially in demand. Jobs in agriculture, business, health, skilled trades, etc., also available. U.S. citizens only. No upper age limit. Approximately 3,500 volunteers are placed annually. The Peace Corps is one of the best-paid “volunteer” jobs: all expenses paid, extensive training, and a “resettlement allowance” of approximately $6,000 after completing 2-year assignment. Placements in over 73 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific Basin, and Russia. Positions available in teaching English (except in Latin America), though math and science teachers especially in demand. Jobs in agriculture, business, health, skilled trades, etc., also available. U.S. citizens only. No upper age limit. No application deadline, but allow 9 months between application and placement.
# World Endeavors
World Endeavors offers short term volunteer teaching programs (up to 12 weeks, with programs typically running 4-6 weeks) in Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Ghana, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Thailand. Fees and application deadlines vary according to program, with most programs suggesting that you apply at least 12 weeks prior to your intended start date. No TEFL certification is required. World Endeavors also offers an internship in teaching English in Italy. This program lasts 3-6 months. No knowledge of Italian is necessary. Participants will take part in an intensive Italian language training (80 hours per month) upon arrival in Italy. By the conclusion of the program, participants will earn a professional language certification. Program fees vary depending on the length of stay (3-6 months). # WorldTeach
Places volunteers as teachers for one year in America Samoa, Bangladesh, Chile, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Georgia, Guyana, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Pohnpei and Kosrae), Namibia, Panama, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Thailand. Six month placements also available in Chile, Namibia, and Panama. Summer placements available in China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Namibia, Poland, and South Africa. Bachelor's degree required for year long programs. Program fees include international airfare, 3-4 week orientation, training, health insurance, and on-site support. Room and board and a small stipend are provided on-site by the host institution. Some programs offer significant funding through governmental organizations (China, Chile, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and American Samoa). No salary. No application fee. Deadline varies depending on program. 15-75 placements in each country annually.

K-12 Teaching Positions at International Schools

International School Services
Positions are available in American international schools abroad. English is the language of instruction at these K-12 college preparatory schools which serve dependents of the expatriate business, mission, relief and governmental community. Very selective program entails interviewing at a U.S.-based International Recruitment Center (IRC) after passing the initial screening by ISS. Must have two of the three: bachelor's degree, teaching certification, and two years teaching experience. Must also be willing to consider at least two large geographic areas, particularly in the developing world for a two year contract. There is no placement fee, but there is an application fee and an IRC registration fee. Application deadlines vary depending according to program.

Student Teaching Programs

IIEPassport
The Institute of International Education publishes directories with lists of credit-granting study abroad programs which have a student teaching component. Available for summers or semesters. IIE directories are available in the International Center or other study abroad office (see index under “Student Teaching”). There are two directories: Academic Year Abroad and Vacation Study Abroad. Alternatively, you can do an advanced online search, and select “student teaching” under the “Format” menu. As always, U-M credit transfer is dependent upon approval.

Specialized University-Level Teaching

City University
Sends experienced instructors to City University's branches in Bratislava and Trencin, Slovakia, as well as Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Greece, Mexico, Romania, and Switzerland to teach in one or more of the following areas: academic prep English, undergraduate business, and MBA programs. Masters degree or higher in subject area preferred. Airfare, stipend, housing, and health insurance provided. About 20 total placements (EFL and credit courses) annually out of 120-140 applicants. A few teachers occasionally needed mid-year. Rolling admissions.

Positions in Africa

IFESH: International Fellows Program
The International Fellows Program (IFP) is a very selective paid internship program open to graduating seniors and graduate students. It is a nine-month internship for talented recent college graduates and graduate students to provide on-the-job development experience in Africa. They have placed over 1,000 teachers and educators in 15 African countries including Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa.  Fellows provide technical assistance and training to community-based grassroots projects including education, literacy, health development, HIV/AIDS, English as a Second Language, agricultural development, proposal development, managerial training, feasibility studies and small business development. Work permits, health insurance and a monthly stipend are provided. Must be a U.S. citizen. Minimum of Bachelor's degree required, advanced degrees preferred. An application package consists of a cover letter, a resume, three professional or academic letters of recommendation, copies of college transcripts and a one to two-page typed essay. Programs in Asia

General Asia

Princeton-in-Asia
Paid position for English teaching, science and engineering, history, etc. teaching, and business positions for college graduates for one or two years. Teaching placements in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Participants are typically responsible for transportation. Salary is very much country-dependent; housing and health insurance are provided About 85 Teaching Fellowships are available, as well as 40 fellowships in the fields of journalism, international development, and business. Must be TEFL certified prior to departure. Must interview in January and participate in an orientation from May 15-18 at Princeton University. There is an application fee and a program fee. Application deadline: December 1st.
Language Corps
The Language Corps’ Flagship Program offers teaching opportunities in Cambodia, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Most placements last 10-12 months. Included in the 10-12 month contract is a 4-week TESOL training session, at the end of which the participant will earn an official TESOL certificate. There is a program fee. Participants are given a monthly stipend. Salaries on the lower end of the range typically include incentives such as housing. Generally, participants are required to pay for their own airline arrangements, as well as housing. The program fee covers the 4-week training, guaranteed job placement, and on-going support through program duration. Short-term (8 week) volunteer opportunities are offered in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. There is a program fee. 4-week TESOL Training-only programs are also available in Argentina, Brazil, Cambodia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Thailand, and Vietnam. China

Appalachians Abroad Teach in China
Participants teach English at K-12 and higher education institutions in Shanghai or Beijing, but placements in other areas also available. Program length is 1 or 2 years beginning in September (limited number of February departures available). Since the founding of the program, there has been an average of 30-45 participants every year ranging from recent college graduates to retirees. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's degree and a 4-day intensive orientation program in Shanghai, China in late August (program may be waived for applicants with proper qualifications). An eight-week online China TEFL training is available to accepted participants from mid-May to Mid-July. Job placement, work permit, international airfare, housing, health insurance, domestic travel stipend, visa application help and paid vacation provided. Salary varies depending on qualifications. There is an application fee. Application deadline is March 31 for positions starting the following fall or spring.
# Colorado China Council
Colorado China Council, founded in Boulder, Colorado, 1977, places native English speakers with a minimum of a B.A. into university teaching positions in China for one-year contracts. Teach English or other fields depending on your academic background and the university or college's needs. No Mandarin necessary, but TEFL certificate needed for graduating seniors and recent college grads. We place about 20-25 applicants annually. There is an application and program fee. Rolling deadline but apply early for lower fees. The Chinese universities provide free housing, health care, good monthly stipend (by Chinese standards). You pay round-trip airfare though schools will reimburse most of your roundtrip airfare in the spring before your departure. Graduating Seniors and people with NO TEACHING OR TUTORING BACKGROUND will need to take a special 7 day TEFL course in Beijing offered by the Chinese government to qualify for the Z/work visa. All other people with some teaching/tutoring background should check with Alice Renouf, Program Director, regarding whether they need to take CCC's two weeks intensive TESL course in August, or the Beijing course or if they are exempt. Beijing TEFL Certificate program fee for a 7 days in Beijing is about $500 USD, plus housing costs which they can help you with. Program Fees for people who do not need to take the Beijing TEFL program include: application, contract negotiation, 2 week intensive TESL institute including housing in private hotel room or university guest house, Mandarin instruction for beginners and intermediates, assistance with all Chinese government forms, airport pick up, all supplies and materials, some meals, fabulous sightseeing and entertainment and a practicum with Chinese students plus a November Teacher Training Workshop hosted by the China Teachers Consortium in Changsha, Hunan and administered by Yale and WorldTeach for $3,150. AIPT Teach International: China
If you are a U.S. citizen with a college degree, you may be eligible to teach for up to two years in a university in Southern China, Hong Kong or Macau. The Association for International Practical Training (AIPT) is partnering with the Hong Kong-America Center to offer paid positions for Americans who are native English speakers, unmarried, and without dependents. Program benefits include health insurance, a housing subsidy, assistance with getting work permits, renewable appointments (after the first year), and in-country support from AIPT partner, the Hong Kong-America Center. There are program and application fees. Salary varies by location. Online application deadline is March 31st.

Japan

AEON Intercultural Corporation
Recruits teachers for their 300+ schools in Japan. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in Japanese culture, teaching, and business. Must have Bachelor's degree and attend interview process. Japanese language skills are not required. Five-day work week is 36 hours, of which 25 are teaching hours. There is a monthly salary. Furnished apartment, health insurance, teacher training provided, but airfare is not included. There is a processing fee required upon signing of contract. Send resume and essay about why you would like to live and work in Japan to nearest regional office. No deadline, depending on recruitment site; Apply 2-6 months before desired departure date. Interviews often given locally. Hires year-round, 1-year contracts. Those interested in working solely with children should look into the related Amity Teaching program program which specializes in placements with younger children.
JET Program
Administered by the Japanese government, this is a paid one to five year program for teaching English in junior or senior high schools in Japan. Bachelor's degree and U.S. citizenship required. A background in Asian Studies, previous experience abroad, teaching experience or other experience with groups of children seem to be advantages for applicants but are not required. All majors are welcome to apply! Program provides airfare, monthly salary (competitive), orientations, health insurance, pension benefits, paid vacation, and housing arranged with contracting organizations. No fees associated. Japanese language skills not required for teaching positions. For those with at least an intermediate command of Japanese, Coordinator of International Relations positions are available. Required interviews are given at Japanese consulates throughout the U.S. (including Detroit). More than 6,000 JET teachers from over 38 countries are in Japan annually; approximately half renew for a second year. In 2006, there were approximately 2759 JET participants from the U.S. Application deadline: November 18th, early application advised.
Westgate Corporation English Teaching Programs in Japan
Program places recent graduates and graduate students into paid teaching internships in Japanese universities for 3-5 months, with the option to apply for a longer-term job thereafter. Westgate Corporation contracts to provide extracurricular courses for over 50 Japanese universities. This is not a lecturer position—interns work with their assigned curriculum coordinator, supervising teacher and other interns as a team. Must have at least a B.A. by the time internship starts. Degrees in English, Communications, Education, Linguistics, and/or ESL preferred. No knowledge of Japanese necessary. Benefits include roundtrip airfare to Japan (up to $1,000), a furnished shared apartment, Japanese health insurance and a monthly stipend based on past experiences. Upon successful completion of the internship, interns can elect to return to Westgate as a regular instructor. Check website for more details about fees associated. Korea

English Program in Korea (EPIK)
Administered by the Korean government, this is a one-year program for teaching English in Korean schools or provincial in-service training centers. Basic requirement is a Bachelor’s degree, but salary increases with teaching experience and/or TEFL certification. For those without Bachelor’s degrees but at least two years college expeience (Juniors, Associate degree holders), see the after-school TaLK program (http://www.talk.go.kr). No participation or application fees. Work permit, health insurance, orientation, settlement allowance, and housing provided. Five day work week is 40 hours, of which 22 are teaching hours. Application deadline is December 1 for positions beginning in spring.

Taiwan

Hess Educational Organization
Recruits teachers for over 100 schools around Taiwan. Offers two one-year contract options. Must have a Bachelor's degree and passport from an English-speaking country. Teaching materials, training, TEFL certification classes, ongoing support and assistance learning Chinese are included. Desire to work with a variety of age groups and to experience Asian culture strongly preferred. Monthly salary varies according to previous experience. Hess provides health insurance. No fees associated, Hiring is done four times per year. See web site for application deadline.

Austria

# Austrian Fulbright Commission
Financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, the Arts and Culture, this program provides US university graduates with opportunities to work as English teaching assistants and cultural ambassadors at secondary schools throughout Austria. The program runs from early October to late May. Participants teach approximately 13 hours per week. Minimum requirements include an interest in education and a working knowledge of German. There is a monthly salary. Participants must attend an orientation seminar in late September. If accepted, there is an administrative fee is due. Approximately 120 US teaching assistants are placed throughout the country. Application deadline is early January 15.

Czech Republic

Czech Republic Ministry of Education
Opportunity to teach English at primary or secondary state schools, administered through the Czech Ministry of Education. Candidates are required to have a Bachelor's degree, preferably in English (non-English-degree holders must have additional qualifications, e.g. a RSA TEFL certificate); priority is given to those with experience teaching English in a classroom setting. Teachers work approximately 24 hours a week. There is a monthly salary, though there are mandatory medical and social insurance payments. Accommodations should be free or reasonably priced and are arranged by the schools. This program lasts for one academic year (September through June).  See website for more information about applying.

France

French Cultural Services – Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF)
This program of the French Ministry of Education places Americans with some knowledge of French into English assistant posts in French schools. Job involves 12 hours of English conversation classes per week. 7 and 9 month positions available starting October 1. Must be U.S. citizens, have at least two years of higher education, and at least a basic proficiency in French. Monthly salary. No fees associated. Application deadline is January 1. Hungary

Central European Teaching Program
Placements for semester or school year in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges in Hungary teaching English, U.S. history, literature, culture and civilization. Must have bachelor's degree and be at least 21 years old. Experience teaching ESL or other subject preferred. Housing, salary (at current rates in host country), and basic health insurance provided. There is a program fee which includes in-country orientation (not training) and support during the program. There is an application fee. Applications accepted year-around. Russia

# Camp Counselors USA (CCUSA)
Offers an “educational work-travel program” in youth camps across Russia for 4 or 8 weeks. CCUSA's Russian Program provides placement in a camp with full room and board and a small, symbolic stipend (not enough to cover program fee). Minimum requirements include a love of children and some experience with them. Fee includes round-trip airfare from New York, visa, travel insurance, orientations (no training in teaching techniques) in New York and Moscow, and support during the 4 or 8 week summer program. Application due April 1. Usually about 100 applicants.
Serendipity American Home English Program
Positions in Vladimir, Russia, teaching English at the American Home for one year (contract runs from mid-August until April 30th with probable summer extension to June 30). Applicants should have at least a Bachelor's degree (in any subject) and a strong interest in working in Russia. Some knowledge of Russian and experience in tutoring/teaching is strongly recommended before departure. Must take online TEFL course before participation. Teachers receive monthly stipend, work permit, weekly individual tutoring sessions in Russian, and internet access. Program also provides three-week orientation at beginning of program, support from Russian and American staff, and a substantial collection of teaching materials. Teachers are responsible for their own airfare, health insurance, and visa fees, and pay for pre-arranged family stays out of their monthly salary. Participants may return for a second year. There is a small application fee; deadline is March 1. Generally receive about 12 applications per year to fill at least eight positions. Spain

Spanish Ministry of Education Teaching Assistantship Program
Grantees will work in Spain as English language and North American culture assistant teachers under the supervisor and guidance of a classroom teacher. Assistants will teach 12-16 hours per week. Positions typically last eight months, from early October to late May. Candidates should be US or Canadian citizens, be at least an undergraduate junior, and have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish. Grantees are provided with a stipend, an orientation period at the beginning of their contract, medical insurance, and paid school holidays. No fees associated. Apply online; application deadline is March 31st.
Training Express
Offers paid teaching placements in Spain (primarily in Barcelona and Madrid) for an academic year (September-June) through their International Communications Internship program. Interns will be teaching adult learners who are studying English as part of their job. Eligible candidates hold and undergrad or graduate degree (in any field, though Education and ESL are preferred) and are native English speakers who are at least 20 years old. Teachers receive a monthly stipend, but have the potential to earn more the more hours they teach. There is a program fee that includes student visa and related legal fees, and intensive Spanish language course, and a TEFL/ESL Executive Language Trainer course. Housing is NOT included and must be arranged independently. Interns have the opportunity to get involved with other projects in the company including marketing, recruitment and product development. Interested applicants should apply by the end of April for a September start date.

Chile

Chilean Ministry of Education/English Opens Doors Program
Administered by the Chilean Ministry of Education, the English Opens Doors Program offers 11, 8, 6, and 4 month placements in public schools throughout Chile. Participants are expected to spend 25 hours a week as assistants in the classroom and an additional 10 hours per week planning for classes and facilitating extracurricular activities. Interested applicants should be native speakers of English, possess an undergraduate degree, have some relevant teaching experience (TEFL certification is a plus), a strong interest in Chilean culture, and will ideally have had some experiencing living abroad, preferably in a developing country. Participants receive a monthly salary. Program fees include accommodation and meals with a host family, health insurance, pre-departure support, orientation and more. AIPT Teach International - Lebanon 
Teaching positions in Beirut, Lebanon for Americans who are native English speakers to work in primary, secondary, and post secondary schools. Program dates are mid-August to late June of the following year. Should be a U.S. citizen with a college degree and teaching experience. Program fee includes heatlh insurance, housing or a housing subsidy, assistance with getting work permits, and in-country support. A salary is also included, though it varies by location.
