home | taxes and social security | determining eligibility for a ssn and card Determining Eligibility for a Social Security Number and CardEligibility for a Social Security number and card varies, depending on your situation. If you need a Social Security number but are not eligible for one (based on the eligibility requirements listed below), you may apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) through the U-M Payroll Office. The U-M Payroll Office is located in the Wolverine Tower building (S. State and Eisenhower Streets). The ITIN is issued officially by the U.S. government (not the U-M Payroll Office) and may take several weeks or even months to receive.
