Mandatory Immigration Check-in for Students

Overview of Immigration Check-in

During the check-in program you will:

  • Review legal requirements of F1/J1 status
  • Provide original and photocopies of your immigration documents
  • Receive a travel signature

Please arrive 15 minutes before the program start time.

The check-in session will last approximately two and a half hours (one hour for Returning/Change Of Level students), and you must attend the entire session. Your dependents are not required to attend. If you do not have the required documents or if you arrive late, you will NOT be allowed to attend the session and you will have to reschedule your appointment.

Things to Do Before You Attend the Check-In Session

Make two copies of each of your immigration documents (one copy is for you, the other is for the International Center). There are several places where you can make photocopies:

  • U-M Computing Sites – located in the basement of the Michigan Union or Angell Hall. You may make photocopies on multi-function devices (MFDs) using your M-Card.
  • Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) – located on the 4th floor of the Michigan Union. Visit their web page for current hours of operation.
  • FedEx Office – 505 E. Liberty Street, between Thompson and Maynard Streets.

Returning and Change of Level Students

If you have previously attended the University of Michigan as an F-1 or J-1 student and are now returning either to complete your degree or to start a brand new degree program, you may be eligible to complete a Returner/COL check-in session.

  • You are a Returning Student if:
    • You attended the University of Michigan within the last 5 years, have been away from the United States for more than 5 months, and will return to complete your original degree program.
  • You are a Change of Level Student if:
    • You completed a degree at the University of Michigan within the last 4 months and are now returning to UM to begin a new degree program.

This session will last approximately 1 hour. During this session, you will listen to a 5-10 minute refresher presentation and then an International Student Advisor will review your documents and issue you a travel signature.
