U-M Health Insurance Plan Coverage and Rates (2009-10 Academic Year)

The following is a listing of current coverage highlights and rates for the 2009-10 academic year from 9/1/09 to 8/31/10. For complete information on this insurance plan, refer to U-M International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan brochure. pdf icon

Coverage Highlights

  • $1,000,000 per accident or illness (effective 9/1/2009)
  • 100% coverage up to $5000 (after the deductible)
  • 80% coverage from $5,001 to $40,000
  • 100% coverage from $40,001 to $1,000,000 (effective 9/1/2009)
Note: These are percentages of reasonable and customary cost, which are the amounts that the insurance company will cover if it pays for services. You will ultimately receive services at the least cost, especially when totals might exceed $5000, by going to a Preferred Provider doctor or hospital, such as the University of Michigan Health System.
  • Deductible of $50 is reduced to 0 if patient (age 10 or older) is first treated by or referred by UHS (University Health Service. The deductible will be reduced to $10 if a visiting scholar or a student/scholar spouse is first treated at, or referred by, North Campus Family Health Service or Community Family Health Center . The deductible will be reduced to $10 for a child is first treated at, or referred by, North Campus Family Health Service, Community Family Health Center, or Pediatric Primary Care at the East Arbor Health Center (under 18 years of age).
  • 90% coverage for prescription drugs (excludes birth control, acne medicines).
  • Costs of pregnancy and childbirth covered (limited coverage if pregnancy began before enrollment).
  • Both inpatient and outpatient coverage (for example: hospital room and board, physician's fees, laboratory test, x-rays, ambulance, etc.)
  • Some coverage for mental health problems and drug or alcohol abuse
  • Routine eye exam once per policy year at University Health Service for $15
  • TB screening
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation coverage

Current Rates

Insurance premiums will be billed by the Student Financial Operations Office (not by the insurance company) once per month. Charges cannot be pro-rated. This means that if you have this insurance for any part of the month, you will be charged for the entire month.

Insurance rates change every year on September 1. Rates usually increase; a decrease is rare. The current rates for 2009-2010 rates are listed below.
