U-M International Student/Scholar Health Insurance (IHI) Plan Coverage and Rates

The following is a list of current coverage highlights and rates. For complete information on this insurance plan, refer to the U-M International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan Brochure. pdf icon

Coverage Highlights

  • $1,000,000 per accident or illness
  • 100% coverage up to $5000 (after the deductible)
  • 80% coverage from $5,001 to $40,000
  • 100% coverage from $40,001 to $1,000,000

Note: The insurance company will pay these percentages of reasonable and customary costs. You will receive services at the lowest cost by going to a doctor or hospital in the Aetna Network, such as the University of Michigan Health System. You can find other doctors and hospitals in the network on the Aetna web site. As of February 6, the North Campus Family Health Service and the Community Family Health Center have closed. The two new family clinics that have replaced those clinics are the Packard Health clinic (on Packard Street), and Packard Health West (on Maple Road). If you or your family were treated at the North Campus clinic or the Community Family Health Center, those medical records have now been transferred to the Packard Health clinic.

  • 90% coverage for prescription drugs (excludes acne medications).
  • Costs of pregnancy and childbirth are covered. If the pregnancy began before enrollment in the IHI plan, some coverage limitations may apply. Please review the Pre-existing Conditions section of “What's Covered, What's Not” for more details.
  • Both inpatient and outpatient coverage (for example: hospital room and board, physician's fees, laboratory test, x-rays, ambulance, etc.)
  • Some coverage for mental health problems and drug or alcohol abuse
  • Routine eye exam once per policy year at University Health Service for $15. Visit UHS Eye Clinic for clinic hours and information about the eye exam.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening: To find out if you need to be tested for TB, or to schedule an appointment, visit UHS International Mandatory Tuberculosis Screening.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation coverage

Current Rates

Your monthly insurance bill can be seen at Wolverine Access >Student Business >Campus Finances >Account Inquiry. You will not receive a paper bill in the mail. Charges cannot be pro-rated. This means that if you have this insurance for any part of the month, you will be charged for the entire month.

Insurance rates change every year on September 1. Rates usually increase; a decrease is rare. The current rates are listed below.
