U-M Funding for Study Abroad
Funding for study abroad (for academic credit) is available from several sources: Financial aid and special scholarships through the University of Michigan. These are the best source of support for study abroad. Undergraduate scholarships are rare, but a list of opportunities is available below.
Financial Aid
Study abroad financial aid only applies to students that already receive financial aid on campus. All U-M programs are supported by financial aid. For details, see the U-M Center for Global and Intercultural Study’s Financial Considerations page.
You can apply for financial aid at the Office of Financial Aid's Study Abroad page. Be sure to check deadlines at the Office of Financial Aid web site. For non U-M programs, use of financial aid may be problematic. Some non-U-M programs may be willing to process some types of financial aid.

U-M LSA Scholarships for Current Students

These scholarships are open to all LSA students who have been enrolled at U-M at least one full year and are awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Interested students can find more information and the application at U-M LSA Scholarships. Award amounts vary and may be used towards study abroad. |

The International Institute and its Area Studies Centers offer scholarships (for U-M students only) for overseas study, research and internships. Check their web site early in the Fall for application deadlines. U-M graduating seniors and graduate students may apply for Fulbright Scholarships, (apply in September, one year in advance) through the International Institute. |

U-M Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI)

Student Academic Multicultural Initiatives Program (SAMI), offers limited grants to U-M undergraduate students for multicultural-related study abroad, internships or research purposes. These grants are provided on a competitive basis and require the submission of a brief online proposal. |
Gilman Scholarships |
These scholarships may be used for U-M and Non-U-M study abroad programs worldwide. Through a national competition, they are available to undergraduates who already receive a federal Pell Grant and are U.S. citizens. Additional funds are available for recipients who will be studying a Critical Language while abroad. |
Bridging Scholarships For Study in Japan |
These scholarships may be used for study abroad U-M and Non-U-M programs located in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend for students on semester-long programs and students on academic year programs. |
Boren Awards for International Study
|
Undergraduate and graduate students considering study in most areas outside of Western Europe can apply for the David L. Boren Scholarships or Fellowships, offered through the National Security Education Program (NSEP). This program has a One-Year Service Commitment with U.S. government agencies involved in national security. Application deadlines are in January.
