On September 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) announced that, effective October 1, 2026, it will “broaden its online presence review” to include TN and TD visa applicants. DOS instructs all TN and TD visa applicants “to set the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to ‘public’ or ‘open.’” This DOS guidance is specific to the visa application process at US consulates and embassies. Canadian citizens are generally exempt from the visa requirement and, therefore, are not affected by this policy change. Note that DOS already conducts similar screenings of H-1B and other visa applicants.
