On Friday, July 17, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will publish the final rule in the Federal Register to end “duration of status” (D/S) for F and J nonimmigrants.
The final rule changes the admission period for F and J nonimmigrants to a fixed period of time. F and J nonimmigrants who need additional time to complete their studies or exchange program will have to file a request to extend their status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The International Center will now review and analyze the rule. We will then provide information to students and scholars impacted by the rule and to U-M departments. We also plan to offer a series of webinars for students, scholars and departments on the rule. The webinars will be announced via email and through announcements on our website.
We expect that there will be a 60-day implementation period after the July 17th publication date before the rule takes effect (approximately September 15).
