Departure & Transfer-Out

If you are returning home, or moving to another city in the U.S., you will need to make extensive, detailed arrangements to not only update your immigration information at U-M, but also to prepare for leaving Ann Arbor in general. The checklist below provides a general list of things to take care of before you leave.

Departure/Transfer-Out Checklist

Transferring to Another U.S. Higher Education Institution

The Transfer Out request is used for students who are ending their studies at U-M to transfer their SEVIS record to a new school where they will continue their studies. This should not be used for students who will continue their studies at U-M and will study at another school for summer only.

F-1 Student: Please log in to the M-Passport portal, click on Requests > Transfer Out, and follow the instructions from there.

J-1 Student: Please complete the J-1 Transfer Out Form.

Departing the U.S.

The Departure Form is used to shorten or end your SEVIS record. This should not be used for students applying for OPT, transferring to a new school, or for summer vacation. If in doubt, please speak to an International Center advisor first.

F-1 Student: If you are graduating prior to your I-20 end date, leaving the U.S. permanently, or pausing your studies while outside the U.S., please log in to the M-Passport portal, click on Requests > Departure Form, and follow the instructions from there. The International Center will use the information to adjust or end your SEVIS record.

J-1 Student: If you are graduating prior to your DS-2019 end date, leaving the U.S. permanently, or pausing your studies while outside the U.S., please log in to the M-Passport portal, click on Requests > J-1 Departure Form, and follow the instructions from there. The International Center will use the information to adjust or end your SEVIS record.
