Health Insurance
All J-1 Scholars are automatically enrolled in the international health insurance (IHI) plan and are billed for the plan through Student Financial Services even though they are not students.
Visiting scholars who are U-M employees may be eligible for faculty/staff benefits. U-M faculty staff benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance and a legal services plan. If you are eligible for these benefits, this would have been stated in the Department of State letter you received with your DS-2019 or you could also check with your host department.
If you are eligible for faculty/staff benefits and enroll yourself and any J-2 dependents in one of the faculty/staff health insurance plans, your IHI plan will be automatically cancelled. Any of the U-M faculty/staff medical insurance plans except for the Consumer-Directed Health Plan (CDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA) will meet U-M and Department of State insurance requirements for J-1 Exchange Visitors. The IHI cancellation date will depend on when your faculty/staff benefits begin.
Leaving U-M early
If you leave the U.S. before your DS-2019 end date, be sure to follow the J-1 departure procedure (see link below) in addition to any end of employment procedures through your department or Human Resources.
