  • Routine/preventive care – including immunizations
  • 90% coverage for prescription drugs
  • Pregnancy and childbirth are covered.
  • Both inpatient and outpatient coverage (for example: hospital room and board, physician's fees, laboratory tests, x-rays, ambulance, etc.)
  • Mental health problems and drug or alcohol abuse
  • Routine eye exam in-network twice per policy year for $20 co-pay
  • Your insurance will also cover routine eye exams at University Health Service for a $20 co-pay. Visit UHS Eye Clinic for clinic hours and information about the eye exam.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation coverage
  • Some dental coverage

See Insurance Plan Documents for more details about the deductible, co-pays and co-insurance, in and out of network health care providers, and the out of pocket maximum.

$100 annual deductible in-network/$100 annual deductible out-of-network

The annual deductible is what you must pay each policy year (September 1 – August 31) before insurance starts to cover costs. The annual deductible does not apply to some services, such as immunizations, emergency room visits, routine physical exams, and prescription drugs.

Co-pays for office visits and hospital admissions

A co-pay is what you pay, then insurance covers the rest. Co-pay examples: Office visit or urgent care clinic: $20; Emergency Room: $75 (waived if admitted); Hospital Room/Board/Miscellaneous Expense: $150 (per hospital admission)

Co-insurance for most other services

Co-insurance is the percentage that you pay. For most in-network services, you will pay 10% and the insurance company will pay 90%.

University Health Service

Students will save money by getting medical care at University Health Service during terms when they are enrolled in classes. Many UHS services are free for enrolled students, so it will not be necessary to pay the deductible, co-pay or co-insurance.

In-Network Medical Care

If you are not an enrolled student, do not want to receive health care at UHS, or need health care that UHS cannot provide, you will save money by going to a doctor or hospital in the BCN network, such as Michigan Medicine. You can find other doctors and hospitals in the network on the Blue Care Network website.

Out of network Medical care

Your health insurance plan will also cover care if you go to a doctor or hospital not in the Blue Care Network, but this option will be the most expensive for you.

Out of pocket maximum

Once you have paid the “out of pocket maximum”, you will not have to pay co-pays or co-insurance for the rest of that policy year. A policy year is September 1 through August 31. The out-of-pocket maximum for this plan is Individual: $3,500 / Family $7,000 in-network and Individual $3,500 /Family $7,000 out-of-network per policy year.

What’s Covered, What’s Not

The U-M International Student/Scholar Health Insurance (IHI) covers treatment when you are sick, injured or pregnant, as well as routine and preventive care. Your Insurance Plan Documents have more information about exactly what is and is not covered.

  • Vision: The plan includes routine eye exams in-network twice per policy year and one office visit for the fitting of prescription contact lenses per policy year. Glasses and contact lenses are not covered.
  • Dental: The plan covers routine exams and cleanings twice a year, and also covers emergency pain relief, fillings, and the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth. For additional information and resources, please refer to the Dental Care section.
  • Preventive care: This plan also covers what we call preventive care. Preventive care includes your annual physical, annual visit to the gynecologist, routine tests or screening, and immunizations. For more information on these benefits, see the “Preventive Services” section of your Member Guide.
  • Medical evacuation to your home country is covered, as well as repatriation. Medical evacuation occurs when you are too ill to complete your stay at the University of Michigan, and you must return to your home country. In this case, the medical costs of your return trip will be covered by the insurance company. Repatriation refers to the shipment of your body back to your home country in the event of your death.
  • The costs of pregnancy and childbirth are covered.
Dental Care

The U-M International Student/Scholar Health Insurance (IHI) plan covers routine exams and cleanings twice a year, and also covers emergency pain relief, fillings, and the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth. You can find more information on dental coverage in the “adult dental" section of your Member Guide, which is one of your Insurance Plan Documents.

  • Visit Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and select Blue Dental PPO as your network. Enter your location, then search for dentists. For routine exams and cleanings, search for dentists whose specialty is "General Dentistry."
  • You can also use your insurance plan at the Graduate Clinics at the University of Michigan Dental School. (Note: the University of Michigan Dental School has other clinics, but not all of them accept your insurance. When you call to make your appointment, ask if your insurance is accepted. If not, ask if there is another University of Michigan Dental School clinic that provides the services you need and that accepts your insurance.)
  • You can also ask friends, classmates, department administrators or professors for recommendations, then check to see if the dentist is in the insurance plan’s network.
  • If your dentist has questions about how to submit a claim to your insurance, you can refer them to this Provider Guide. The “commercial” column applies to your insurance plan. A Dental Provider Summary Guide is also available.

If you are under age 19, or have children under age 19, your plan provides more dental coverage, which is explained in the “pediatric dental” section of your Member Guide.

Dental Emergencies

If you have a dental emergency, call your dentist for advice. You can also:

Lower-Cost Dental Services

If you need a type of dental treatment that is not covered by your insurance plan, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry has lower-cost dental services for adults and children. Most of the services are provided by student dentists, supervised by faculty members. There may be a wait of several weeks for an appointment.

Other Options for Dental Care

  • Dental Faculty Associates (DFA) Clinic
Fees are similar to private dentists, but this clinic may be convenient for students, scholars, and their families since it is located in the School of Dentistry.
