On 4/5/2025, the U.S. Department of State announced it revoked all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and would not issue visas to South Sudanese passport holders.

Over the past few days, the International Center has learned that some current U-M students and recent graduates have had their student visas revoked and/or their SEVIS records terminated.  The SEVIS record termination was done by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without notification to the university or to the students. Visa revocations are issued by the Department of State (DoS) and communicated directly to the students, without notification to the university.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released an updated interim final registration regulation on March 12, 2025, which is set to take effect on April 11, 2025. As this is an "interim" final regulation, DHS may provide further clarification and guidance in the future.

The University of Michigan International Center is excited to host a Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) for new international students and parents on Saturday, May 17, 2025 in Hong Kong. The International Center is seeking PDO Student Leaders to volunteer for this event. Student Leaders will share valuable information with new students and their parents in order to prepare them for their arrival in Ann Arbor.

On 2/18/2025, the US Department of State announced changes to the eligibility criteria for nonimmigrant interview waivers, also known as "drop box appointments." If you qualify for a visa interview waiver, you can apply for a visa without an in-person interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

FSIS is closely tracking any developments in immigration policy and will continue to share updates through our usual communication channels. While the new Administration has announced several executive orders, none of them directly affect employment-based immigration (e.g. H-1B). However, some of these orders may impact processing times at USCIS or U.S. consulates abroad, and they could lay the groundwork for potential future restrictions, such as travel bans.
