U.S. Tax Withholding Forms: Open Question and Answer Session for International Students

Are you an international student preparing to work at U-M or do you receive a fellowship that covers living expenses (not just tuition)? Before you start, you'll need to complete several tax forms, such as the IRS Form W-4, State of Michigan Form W-4, the Alien Certificate, and potentially additional forms if your country has a tax treaty with the U.S.

January International Coffee Hour

International Coffee Hour is a great opportunity to meet new people from around the world! The event is open to all members of the U-M community, including international and U.S. students, scholars, faculty, staff and their partners.

This month, we’re partnering with the U-M Arts Initiative team, who will share ways to connect with the arts during your time at U-M. Plus, attendees will have the option to participate in a creative activity!

New Student Welcome Dinner

Welcome new international students starting your studies in January 2026! We hope you will join us at South Quad Dining Hall to mingle and meet others from across campus! Open to new students of all study levels.

Students without a meal plan: Check-in with the IC staff member outside of South Quad between 6-7pm. This will ensure you are not charged for the meal.

Students with meal plan: If you have a meal plan, no need to check in with staff - just swipe your card like usual and join us in the Transformer room!

U-M Library Basics

Gain insight into the resources and services available at the library and learn strategies for efficiently finding information for your research projects.

Join a U-M Librarian as the questions below are explored:

  • How can I access library resources remotely or in person?
  • What kind of technology help can I get at the library?
  • How can I find scholarly books and articles?
  • What are some of the research tools the library provides that may help me with my research?

Orientation Encore: Dental Services within the University 101: Your Path to Care

Join us for an engaging and informative workshop focused on the dental care resources available to students through the University’s Dental School. Whether you're interested in preventive care or more specialized treatment, this session will walk you through all the opportunities for receiving high-quality dental services here on campus.

Orientation Encore: How to Use Your U-M International Health Insurance Plan

This presentation will provide detailed information on how to use the University's required health insurance for international students and scholars (the International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan). You will learn how and where to obtain medical treatment if needed, and how understanding your health insurance can help you avoid unnecessary expenses. Lunch will be provided.

Orientation Encore: Meet the University Career Center

Kickstart your career journey with the University Career Center (UCC)! This session introduces you to the University Career Center’s (UCC) wide range of resources that support international students, from career coaching and resume reviews to job search tools and networking. You’ll learn how to schedule appointments, explore workshops, and leverage the community toolkit. We’ll also share strategies for finding internships and job opportunities that are friendly to international students and building your professional network.

Orientation Encore: Driving in the U.S. presented by AAA

Are you new to driving in the United States? Driving conditions and customs may be different than what you are used to in your home country. This workshop will provide information to help you prepare for driving in the U.S., including driving tips, driving etiquette, and important skills to keep you safe on the roads in good and bad weather.
