U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Eligibility Update

The State Department recently announced changes to the eligibility criteria for nonimmigrant interview waivers, also known as "drop box appointments." If you qualify for a visa interview waiver, you can apply for a visa without an in-person interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

The updated policy states that nonimmigrant visa applicants are eligible for an interview waiver if they are renewing a visa in the same category and if that visa expired less than 12 months prior to the new visa application.

To be eligible for an interview waiver, applicants must also:

  • Apply in their country of nationality or residence
  • Have never been refused a visa (unless the refusal was overcome or waived)
  • Have no apparent or potential ineligibility

Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis or due to local conditions.

If you have any questions or concerns about the visa application process or your continued eligibility for visa interview waiver, please reach out to the consulate or embassy where you plan to apply.
