MLK 101

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. is the first and only private citizen whose birthday is officially commemorated by the U.S. federal government. During his short life - just 39 years old when he was assassinated in 1968 - he led a nonviolent social and political movement against racism.  He has become a symbol of the historical and current-day struggle for civil rights and equality in the U.S.
