Internships are a great opportunity to translate what you’ve learned in the classroom into real-world experience. However, the world we live in right now is limiting your options, making it difficult to find an in-office internship. Have you thought about doing an internship virtually this summer?
What is a virtual internship?
Virtual internships mean that you can work with companies across the world (including some in the U.S.) to support a myriad of projects. When completing a virtual internship, many of the same aspects of a traditional in-person internship still exist: meetings with your supervisor or teammates, completing a mix of individual and group projects, and learning about the overall company culture and industry it works in.
What are the benefits of a virtual internship?
Here are some excellent resources that highlight the benefits of a virtual internship:

- 8 Benefits of a Remote Internship (Global Experiences)
Are these internships paid?
In general, virtual internships are unpaid. However, they may have other forms of compensation:
- Some might offer academic credit. If you are interested in receiving academic credit for a virtual internship, you will have to speak with your academic advisor. If you want the credit to count towards your major/minor, you will have to speak with your major/minor advisor. More information can be found here.
- Some organizations are offering financial credit for participation in a future study abroad program through the same organization (for example, Winter 2021, Summer 2021).
- Students participating in a Sage Corps remote internship program are eligible to receive a stipend from their host startup company (subject to availability).
- Virtual internships in Spring/Summer 2020 are eligible for funding from the LSA Opportunity Hub! For more information about eligibility requirements, award disbursements, and how to apply, please visit here.
Where are they located?
As mentioned earlier, you could intern for companies located all over the world (don’t forget that you and your company might be in different time zones!). Some internship-providing organizations offer opportunities in the U.S. as well.
If you are seeking domestic virtual internship opportunities through U-M, the LSA Opportunity Hub is a great resource.
