Federal Tax Software for Non-Residents
GLACIER Tax Prep is a tax return preparation software program designed primarily for nonresident alien students, scholars, trainees, researchers, and other educational immigration statuses to prepare their U.S. federal income tax return Form 1040NR. GLACIER Tax Prep also prepares Form 8843. Use is free of charge, but is limited to people with University of Michigan/Ann Arbor or University of Michigan/Dearborn uniqnames.
GLACIER Tax Prep Software (U-M/Ann Arbor uniqname and password required)
Nonresidents should not use software (one example is TurboTax but there are many others) designed for resident tax forms. Your form will not be correct and you will then have to submit an amended tax return to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
- GLACIER Tax Prep FAQs
GLACIER Tax Prep says I need a “No Employment Letter” from University of Michigan. How do I get this letter?
The U-M Payroll Office can provide this letter. To request the letter, email [email protected]
I am using GLACIER Tax Prep but have questions.
Click on the Help link at the top of any GLACIER Tax Prep screen. You will then be able to send a question to the GLACIER Tax Prep Support Center. The Support Center will send a response to the email address in your GLACIER Tax Prep record.
Where should I mail my tax form(s)?
GLACIER Tax Prep will automatically produce a PDF instruction sheet for you. These instructions explain how to assemble and prepare your tax forms and where to mail them.
I graduated last year and am on F-1 Optional Practical Training or J-1 Academic Training. Can I still have access to GLACIER Tax Prep?
Yes, as a U-M/Ann Arbor F-1 OPT student or J-1 student on Academic Training you are still eligible to use GLACIER Tax Prep.
Federal Tax Software for Residents
Residents for tax purposes may be able use free tax preparation software listed on the the U.S. Department of Treasury Internal Revenue Service web site. Other options include purchasing commercial tax software or paying to use commercial tax preparation web sites. Two examples of the many such products available are Turbotax or H&R Block At Home™.
State Tax Software for Nonresidents
Sprintax is online tax software that can prepare your state tax return. Your cost with the U-M discount will be $56.99, which is a $3 discount from the regular fee. Use the link below to use Sprintax with the U-M discount. If you also need to file tax forms for other states, Sprintax can prepare them too for an additional charge.
SPRINTAX Tax Software (U-M/Ann Arbor uniqname and password required)
If you prefer not to use Sprintax, the State of Michigan Department of Treasury offers links to software companies offering tax preparation and e-filing services. Look for “state only” offers and make sure that the non-resident form (Michigan Schedule NR) is available.
State Tax Software for Residents
The tax software you used to prepare your federal (national) tax return form can probably also prepare your state income tax form. If not, the State of Michigan Department of Treasury offers links to software companies offering tax preparation and e-filing services.
