At this point, there are no specific travel restrictions for green card holders at U-M to be aware of, though they may be implemented in the future.** As you can imagine, we're following the developments in this area quite closely and we appreciate the anxiety felt by Legal Permanent Residents who are considering traveling abroad.
Faculty and Staff Immigration Services (FSIS) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) in the U-M International Center (IC) have very specific roles, expertise, and responsibilities at the university. Advising current green card holders is not part of either office’s portfolio. There is no specific U-M office that advises current green card holders on immigration matters.
If an enrolled U-M student has questions about their permanent resident status and traveling outside the U.S., they should contact Student Legal Services, which may refer students to an external immigration attorney for a free consultation. Faculty and staff with a green card are encouraged to contact a private immigration attorney. The American Immigration Lawyers Association provides an attorney referral service.
Please note the travel-related resources for legal permanent residents, provided for informational purposes, as listed on the IC’s Green Card Holder Responsibilities webpage. U-M Information and Technology Services also maintains a page with helpful guidance regarding international travel with technology. You may also wish to register your travel with U-M.
Ultimately, whether to travel is a personal decision based on your personal circumstances. Any student or employee considering international travel is encouraged to remain aware of current circumstances by watching reputable media and U.S. government sources for updates.
