Pre-Departure Orientation
The International Center offers in-country and virtual Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) sessions each summer for students starting their studies in the fall semester. A virtual PDO is also offered for students starting their studies in the winter semester.
These events are a great opportunity to prepare for your arrival in Ann Arbor, including information on preparing for your visa interview, arranging housing, and other important steps! Click to learn about our virtual PDO and in-country PDO opportunities.
Although the International Center PDOs are over, you can still view a recording of the Virtual PDO on our website. Additionally, the in-country PDO page lists other pre-departure event offerings that might be of interest to you.
International Summer Orientation Peer Advisors
Each summer, the International Center hires current international students to help us welcome you to the University of Michigan community! They will present peer-led presentations on a variety of topics related to life in Ann Arbor (Peer-2-Peer Conversations), lead social events, and staff a Welcome Desk in order to answer any questions you might have upon your arrival. Immigration Requirements (Students & Scholars)
The following is a list of additional requirements and recommendations for new graduate/professional students, undergraduate students, and scholars (J-1 Exchange Visitors):
- F-1 and J-1 Students (Undergraduate & Graduate/Professional)
- Required: Upon your arrival in the United States, you must complete the International Center's mandatory check-in. The Mandatory Immigration Check-in is conducted virtually.
- Scholars (Non-Student J-1 Exchange Visitors)
- Required: You must complete the mandatory check-in for Scholars, including the online pre- and post-arrival training and the check-in. The check-in is currently being conducted virtually.
