In-Country Pre-Departure Orientation Events

PDO 2024 - In Country

The International Center is excited to announce a series of Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) events in China, India, South Korea and Taiwan! These events are an excellent opportunity to prepare for your travels to the U.S., meet other new U-M students, as well as get your questions about U-M answered by current students, alums and IC staff.

Summer 2024 PDO hosted sites will be:

  • May 18: Taipei, Taiwan
  • May 24: Seoul, South Korea
  • June 9: New Delhi, India
  • June 15: Mumbai, India
  • June 16: Shanghai, China
  • June 22: Beijing, China

Due to limited space at event locations, undergraduate students are allowed to bring one parent to the event. Graduate students are not permitted to bring guests.

Students are only allowed to register for one event. If you are unable to attend in-person, there is also a virtual PDO option being offered. You can find more information and register for the virtual event here.

Pre-Departure Orientation: Taiwan

The International Center is excited to welcome Tawianese students and parents in Taipei! This event is being held in conjunction with the U-M Pan-Asia Reunion. 

The PDO in Taiwan will be held at the following time and location:

Taipei PDO: Saturday, May 18, 2024
Time: 9:00 - 12:00
Location: Le Meridien Taipei

Pre-Departure Orientation: South Korea

The International Center is excited to welcome Korean students and parents in Seoul!

Sessions for students will be offered in English. Parents of undergraduate students who attend will join a separate session at the same time, which will be conducted in Korean. Undergraduate students can indicate if a parent will join when they register.

The PDO in Korea will be held at the following time and location:

Seoul PDO: Friday, May 24, 2024
Time: 13:00 - 17:00
Location: Sofitel Ambassador Seoul

Pre-Departure Orientations: India

The International Center is excited to host two events in India for students and parents! Undergraduate students are allowed to bring one parent with them to an event.

PDO events in India will be held at the following times and locations:

New Delhi PDO: Sunday, June 9, 2024
Time: 9:00 - 13:00
Location: ALoft Aerocity New Delhi

Mumbai PDO: Saturday, June 15, 2024
Time: 9:00 - 13:00
Location: Courtyard Mumbai International Airport

Pre-Departure Orientations: China

The International Center is excited to welcome new students and parents in China!

Sessions for students will be offered in English. Parents of undergraduate students who attend will join a separate session at the same time, which will be conducted in Mandarin. Undergraduate students can indicate if a parent will join when they register.

The PDO events in China will be held at the following times and locations:

Shanghai PDO: Sunday, June 16, 2024
Time: 9:00 - 13:00
Location: The Langham, Xintiandi

Beijing PDO: Saturday, June 22, 2024
Time: 9:00 - 13:00
Location: Ritz-Carlton Beijing

Other Pre-Departure Events

Many organizations wish to help you prepare for your upcoming educational journey. This section will be updated periodically with events sponsored by University of Michigan Alumni Clubs or recognized student organizations. Additionally, the U.S. Department of State’s Education USA advising centers offer in person or virtual pre-departure orientation events.  While these are not specific to U-M, they may offer valuable insights specific to citizens and residents of that country.
